Akani Simbine has been unstoppable this season, showcasing his sprinting prowess as he eyes the title of Africa’s fastest man.
Despite the season being in its early stages, Simbine has already secured victories in all three of his 100m races this year, including triumphs in the opening two Diamond League events in Xiamen and Keqiao. While the promising start sets the tone for the World Championships in Tokyo this September, the South African sprinter remains grounded, refusing to dwell on discussions about being the one to beat.
"I'm getting into my races, I'm winning my races, and that's all that matters," said the former African record holder in an interview with the BBC. "I'm running well at the start of the season, but this isn’t my peak yet. Once I get into June, having trained well, I can build momentum leading into August and September."
Simbine attributes his winning streak to the strong foundation laid during his indoor campaign. A standout moment was his bronze medal in the 60m at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, marking a historic achievement for South Africa.
"We approached the indoor season as a training opportunity, pinpointing areas I needed to work on—things I could only refine in actual races," Simbine explained. "That preparation has put me in the position to run the way I am now."
Simbine’s fine form will be crucial as he leads South Africa’s charge at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, this weekend.
"My experience in the circuit helps a lot. If I tell the guys to stay calm, they trust my judgment," he said. "They respect my insights, and that makes a difference."
With over 700 athletes across the globe, 74 of them from eight African nations set to compete in the two-day event, Simbine stands poised to continue his impressive season while inspiring those around him.
