Best photographs of 2023 to be recognised at World Athletics Awards

An award will be presented for the best athletics photograph of the year as part of the World Athletics Awards 2023.

The Awards will be celebrated on World Athletics’ platforms in December.

The launch of the Photograph of the Year Award will be followed by announcements for the Women’s and Men’s World Athlete of the Year nominees (11-12 Oct), Fair Play Award shortlist (30 Oct) and Rising Star Award finalists (2-3 Nov).

Any professional photographer who has attended an athletics event in 2023 can take part in the World Athletics Photograph of the Year.

Photographers are requested to submit one photograph via an online form and include a caption, the date the photograph was taken, the image's technical information and a short photographer bio (no more than 50 words).

Entries should be no larger than 5MB and must be received by 23:59 Monaco time on 29 October.

A panel of experts will judge the photos and will select the top 10 entries, which will form part of a digital exhibition.

From that shortlist, the panel will then select the top three images. The finalists will be revealed on 16 November and the winner will be announced via World Athletics social media platforms in early December.

The panelists are:

Dame Valerie Adams – New Zealand’s two-time Olympic shot put champion and winner of four world indoor titles and four world outdoor gold medals. A World Athletics Athletes' Commission member.

Raquel Cavaco Nunes – World Athletics Photo Commissioner since 2013. Has taken part in eight Olympic Games, including in Rio as Venue Press and Photo Operations Manager and in Tokyo as Athletics Venue Manager.

Joel Marklund – an award-winning photographer who works for the sports photo agency Bildbyran. Mentor for the World Athletics Photography Workshop, held during the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23.

Pascal Rondeau – experienced photographer who has covered eight Summer Olympic Games and all major sports events. Venue Photo Manager for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo and Photo Operations Manager in Paris next year.

Blanka Vlasic – Croatia’s multiple world high jump champion, who met with photographers at the World Athletics Photography Workshop in Budapest. A two-time world and two-time world indoor gold medallist who also claimed two medals at the Olympic Games.
