Central Gauteng Athletics is excited to confirm that a total of seven CGA athletes will be representing Team South Africa at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games later this month.
After a very successful send-off event held on 10th July at the Gautrain Radisson Blu Hotel, we are proud to confirm that our Golden Girl Gerda Steyn is the 7th athlete from the province. This is following a lengthy engagement with KZN Athletics and Athletics South Africa on the domicile of Steyn as a National athlete.
Gerda Steyn and Cian Oldknow, being the only ladies in our Province will participate in the Women Marathon race. The Women’s Marathon race has traditionally opened the athletics competition but in this year’s Games it will be the last event of the Games where these 2 athletes will be battling it out.
Below is the competition schedule per athlete:
Ryan Mphahlele- 1500m
Akani Simbine- 100m and 100m relays
Lythe Pillay- 400m and 400m relays
Chesswill Johnson- Long jump
Kyle Blignaut- Shot put
Gerda Steyn- Women Marathon race
Cian Oldknow- Women Marathon race
As a province we understand that the Olympic Games are not just about winning medals but a celebration of excellence at the highest level of sports. We have used the send-off event as a platform to celebrate of our athletes and most importantly as a platform to inspire the upcoming athletes from various communities in the province who have a dream of being Olympians one day. We encourage all our development athletes and clubs to take this as an inspiration to go on the ground and unearth talent.
In the last 7 days leading up to the opening of the Games we will be running daily campaigns to celebrate each athlete from the province said the CGA Acting President Karabo Mabilo during the send-off event. She further congratulated Akani Simbine on being nominated as the flag Bearer for Team SA.
Let us support our athletes during the games and beyond.
