The 2025 Comrades Marathon was an exciting spectacle, with Tete Dijana and Piet Wiersma delivering an intense competition that kept fans on the edge of their seats. As thousands gathered at Moses Mabhida People's Park in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, it became a showcase of true endurance and grit. Tete Dijana claimed victory with a time of 05:25:28, just five seconds ahead of Wiersma, who finished at 05:25:33. This dramatic finish continued the rivalry that began during the previous down run marathon in 2023, illustrating why this race is one of the most prestigious in the world.

The Race Begins

As the race kicked off, participants faced the well-known challenge of the route from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Early in the race, Onalenna Khonkhobe took the lead, demonstrating impressive speed and commitment that had him in front for the early miles. Throughout the first half, Khonkhobe maintained a sustainable pace, quickly gaining a significant more than one kilometer advantage over his nearest competitor.

The Comrades Marathon is famous for testing an athlete's endurance, both physically and mentally. Khonkhobe's strong start was crucial in setting a spirited tone for the race, but it also brought the chasing pack, including Dijana and Wiersma, into play, eager to capitalise if Khonkhobe get tired along the way.

A Changing of the Guard

As the runners approached Cowies Hill, a shift in dynamics began to unfold. Tete Dijana and Piet Wiersma gained ground, gradually narrowing the gap on Khonkhobe. By the time they ascended Cowies Hill, the chase had turned into a fierce battle. Khonkhobe's teammate took over the lead, but he had set a relentless pace that stirred ambition among the competitors.

The strategy shifted from merely keeping up with the pace to positioning for the final stretch. While Khonkhobe's remarkable performance ensured he remained in contention, the excitement built as Dijana and Wiersma firmly set their sights on challenging for the win.

The Final Stretch

As the finish line drew closer, the tension was palpable. The matchup between Dijana and Wiersma had become the highlight, with both runners pushing their limits. With loud cheers rising from the crowd, the final sprint became a strategic game.

Dijana’s experience played a key role as they neared the last bend. He drew on all energy, and with mere meters left in the race, he surged ahead, showcasing his tactical expertise to clinch victory. Wiersma, in close pursuit, could only watch as Dijana crossed the finish line first, achieving a remarkable feat of perseverance and skill.

Bongumusa Mthembu Shines

Amid the fierce competition for first place, Bongumusa Mthembu also made an impressive mark by finishing in the top ten with a time of 05:35:48. Mthembu’s performance was more than just a personal achievement; it also resonated with local fans by making history as the first athlete from KwaZulu-Natal in the top-ten finish at the Comrades Marathon.

His success inspired many in the crowd, serving as a reminder of the dedication and hard work that the marathon represents. The pride he brought to his region added a special layer to this year’s event.

Reflections on the Marathon

The 2025 Comrades Marathon will be remembered as a memorable chapter in its long history. The camaraderie and competitive spirit were evident throughout the event. Athletes trained for months leading up to the race, pushing themselves to their limits in pursuit of their goals.

The tight finish between Dijana and Wiersma highlighted the intense rivalry that pushes athletes to perform at their best. Both displayed incredible determination and sportsmanship, showcasing their commitment to the sport.
