With a 5km personal best of 15:50 set in Latvia in 2023, local running sensation Tayla Kavanagh is set to be a top contender when she lines up for the Boxer Super Run in Durban on Sunday, 13 October 2024.
Kavanagh expresses her fondness for the 5km distance, mentioning its fast pace and intensity. "Runners should definitely incorporate 5km races into their training," she (Kavanagh) says. "Speed is just as important as endurance and balancing the two can dramatically boost performance. That’s why shorter distances like the 5km are essential for any serious runner’s program."
Having competed in the inaugural Boxer Super Run in 2023, Kavanagh is eager to once again face tough competition over the 5km distance.
“I loved the energy and atmosphere at last year’s event,” she recalls. “It was such an enjoyable race, and I’m really looking forward to this year’s edition. The opportunity to compete in a 5km road race with strong competition, especially on such a fast, flat course, made it a real thrill.”
Regarding the R147K prize purse, Kavanagh appreciates the motivation it provides. "Good prize money encourages athletes to push for faster times," she says.
In conclusion, Kavanagh shares her excitement: “My goal is to go out and execute a strong race. With so few 5km road races in South Africa, I’m thrilled to be part of the Boxer Super Run again!”
Finishing 4th at the inaugural Boxer Super Run in 2023, behind elite athletes Glenrose Xaba, Cacisile Sosibo, and Regina Ndungu, Kyla Jacobs (Somerset West) is eager to make her comeback from injury at this year’s event. “I loved the inaugural race,” says Jacobs. “As an elite athlete, I appreciated how well-organized it was, and I relished the chance to compete in the new official World Athletics 5km road running distance on home soil. The atmosphere was electric, full of South African gees and excitement! It’s also an ideal platform to introduce juniors to road running at a more approachable distance.”
She adds: “My goal is to savour every moment of being able to race and compete again, while supporting others and celebrating strong performances. The Boxer Super Run perfectly blends speed and endurance, making it the ultimate test for both track and road athletes.”
“We are thrilled to welcome Tayla Kavanagh and Kyla Jacobs along with an incredible lineup of elite female athletes to the Boxer Super Run in Durban this October,” says Lee-Ann Pillay, Head of Marketing at Boxer Superstores. “Their passion and talent, along with the competitive spirit of all the participants, promise to make this an unforgettable race. We are proud to provide a platform that celebrates South Africa’s top athletes and inspires runners of all levels. We look forward to witnessing world class racing and can’t wait to crown the Queen of the Boxer Super Run 5K.”
