Rome: Chebet and Bromell light up the Golden Gala

Second-fastest time in women's 5000m history (14:03.69), world-leading performance also in the men's 100m with 9.84

The women’s 5000 meters, featuring the second-fastest time in history by Beatrice Chebet, and the men’s 100 meters with a world-leading performance by Trayvon Bromell, light up the evening at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea – Presented by IP in Rome, the fifth leg of the Wanda Diamond League.

Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet was phenomenal: with a time of 14:03.69, she delivered the second-fastest performance ever, setting a Kenyan national record and a Golden Gala record, just over three seconds off Gudaf Tsegay’s world record from 2023 (14:00.21; Tsegay finished fifth today in 14:24.86). Chebet was followed by Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu (14:19.33) and Italy’s local heroes Nadia Battocletti, who smashed her national record by over eight seconds with a time of 14:23.15 – the second-fastest time ever by a European. The men’s 100 meters was also of the highest level: no one had run faster this year than American Trayvon Bromell, who clocked a remarkable 9.84 (+1.1 m/s). Also finishing under ten seconds was Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme (9.99), while Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala was third in 10.01, followed by Americans Brandon Hicklin (10.04) and Fred Kerley (10.06).

In the men’s 1500 meters, France’s Azeddine Habz set the outdoor world-leading time for the year with 3:29.72. In the women’s discus, American Valarie Allman set a meeting record with a throw of 69.21 meters. In the shot put, New Zealander Tom Walsh takes the win with 21.89 meters.

There were thrills in the jumping events as well. The long jump was decided in the Final 3: Italy’s Mattia Furlani took the lead with 8.13 (-0.5 m/s), but Australia’s Liam Adcock responded with 8.34 (-0.2) to claim the win. The men’s high jump was won by South Korea’s Woo Sang-hyeok with 2.32 meters. In the women’s pole vault, victory went to American Sandi Morris with 4.80 meters, while Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts took the win in the women’s triple jump with 14.64 (-0.7).

On the track, there were victories for Americans Quincy Hall in the 400 meters (44.22) and Anavia Battle in the 200 meters (22.53/0.8), Ireland’s Sarah Healy in the 1500 meters (3:59.17), Switzerland’s Jason Joseph in the 110-meter hurdles (13.14/0.9), and Jamaica’s Andrenette Knight in the 400-meter hurdles (53.67).
